Once the site of a freighter ship wreck, only a few remains of scrap metal can be seen on the ocean floor below. Starting with a unique entry through a sandy ledge 7 metres below, you will find a vibrant coral garden and a deep reef wall and incredibly clear viz ranging from 20 – 40m! Situated about 5 minutes boat ride from Layang Layang Resort, this beautiful site is suitable for intermediate to advanced divers only, and the best months to visit are between February and October.
As you explore tiny coves and shallow caverns filled with rock formations covered in soft brown corals, table corals and hard dense corals all surrounded by tropical dancing reef fish, you might encounter razor fish hovering on the sand, and you can enjoy regular visits by manta rays, reef sharks and dogtooth tuna. If you are lucky enough to see a huge sleeping Hump head Parrotfish by the drop off, avert your eyes to avoid a collision as he tries to escape!
Whilst snorkelling along the wall edge, and further down to 20m plus, move across the sheer slope adorned with amazing corals like purple-blue sea fans, barrel sponges amongst clouds of indigo anthias’, and you will see soldier fish and squirrelfish, one variety of which is the huge sabre squirrelfish, easily recognized by its yellow fins. You also might find bigger pelagics such as rainbow runners, bigeye trevallies, barracudas and white tip reef sharks.
As you gradually get to shallower depths of around 8 metres, the wall ends up back into a colourful and sparkling hard coral garden where you will see big eye bream and double bar goatfish forming small schools, spectacular lyre tail hogfish hiding out in the shallows and bird wrasse moving amongst the scleratina. This spot is your safety point as you finally emerge by the landing airstrip.
