Stella Maris Shark Diving

Shark feedings at Stella Maris
When the divers at Stella Maris began diving with sharks in the mid-seventies it raised a few eyebrows. The idea of telling divers that they were about to deliberately enter the water to see sharks seemed to contradict popular dive promotion of the day. But that was then. Now divers come from around the globe to sample Shark Diving in the Bahamas. And twenty-five years later, divers can still witness, first-hand, the beauty and power of the apex predator of the Bahamian and Caribbean reef: Carcharhimus perezi - the Caribbean reef shark, at Stella Maris. more...

Wild Dolphin Encounters
Grand Bahama Island lies off the coast of southern Florida, about 60 nautical miles east of West Palm Beach. The western edge of the Little Bahama Bank, north of West End, Grand Bahama is where the majority of dolphin encounters take place, although you can come across them just about anywhere in the region. This area is between 10-30ft deep, and a spectacular setting for swimming with dolphins - turquoise water over a white sandy bottom. more...

The Bahamas are easily accessible from Florida and excellent for long weekends if you live there. For all others, there are frequent flights from Miami. Acting as a barrier, the Gulf Stream protects the Bahamas from Florida's rain and river run-off, and together with vast oceanic trenches that allow sediment to settle into deep water, it ensures spectacular visibility. The Gulf Stream protect the Bahamas from Florida's rain and river run-off, and together with vast oceanic trenches that allow sediment to settle into the deep water, it ensures spectacular visibility. The Bahama Banks act as a breeding and feeding ground for a prolific variety of marine life; they are particularly favored mating grounds for bottlenose and spotted dolphins.
While Nassau is surrounded by expensive hotels and restaurants, outer-island resorts are small and personal. Of the islands with land-based resorts, San Salvador offers the best diving. In addition to world-class reefs, blue holes and wrecks, the Bahamas are famous for encounters with stingrays, dolphins and sharks.
Shark Rodeo
Situated off Walkers Cay, the northernmost island in the Bahamas, Shark Rodeo is an undisputed hot spot for sharks. Dive boats circle over the site, alerting the sharks to imminent snacks. The divers are escorted to the sand bottom at 11m (36ft) where they settle. A large quantity of bait is suspended in the water, attracting over 100 sharks. Caribbean reef, bull, blacktip and nurse sharks are occasionally joined by lemon sharks or hammerheads. As the sharks have not been handfed, they do not associate the divers with food and show little interest in them.

Keep hurricane season, June through October, in mind; winter weather from December to March means mid-70°F (23°C), cooler water, and sweaters in the evening; average nighttime temperature is in the mid-60°F (18°C), but can drop into the 50°F (10°C) if winter air blows off the continent. May through November is summer in the Bahamas. During these months, the most rain falls and temperatures average about 81°F (27°C). Winter can bring surprisingly cool weather, with averages down about 70°F (23°C). Northers (sudden cold fronts from the north) can rapidly disrupt diving during winter months. The southern islands of the Bahamas chain usually manage to stay a degree or two warmer. Easterly trade winds predominate for most of the year, but there is usually a lee to be found for diving.

Flights from Miami to Freeport (Grand Bahama) or Nassau (New Providence). Inter island connections from there. You can also reach the individual islands with charter flights from Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach.
