Egypt Magic

If you are taking a break from diving, what else should you see and do in Egypt? One could spend anything from a week to a lifetime in Egypt and still be fascinated. more...

The Red Sea is a branch of the Indian Ocean, beginning at the straits of Bab El Mandab, between Yemen and Ethiopia, and then climbing northwest to the point where the Sinai Peninsula divides it into two long narrow gulfs: Eilat and Suez.

The Sinai itself is about 400km long and about 250km wide with an area of 61,000 sq km. The peninsula is divided into two major topographic zones. In the north and west are desert plains, while the south is a mountainous region (2642m high), which is part of the mountain range stretching from deep in Saudi Arabia, across the Sinai and then into Nubia on the African continent. Surrounded by vast deserts, the Red Sea expands 2000 km (1300 miles) from the north, the Gulf of Aqaba, to Bab El Mandeb in the south. Fringing coral reefs developed all along the coast line and water temperatures are relatively constant, summer maxs at 28ºC and winter drops to about 21ºC. Known for mild currents very low sediment runoff allows for explosive coral growth and excellent visibility year-round. The low humidity and high rate of evaporation, makes the Red Sea one of the saltiest life-sustaining seas in the world. Salinity reaches 4.1% resulting in a large variety of endemic species. As a result this area has one of the richest concentrations of varieties of marine life in all of the tropical seas.

The Sinai is a golden triangle framed by the deep blue water of the Red Sea. It developed more than 30 million years ago when Arabia started to drift away from Africa. A huge rupture between these two gigantic plates of the earth filled up with the water from the surrounding oceans and the Red Sea was formed. While the Sinai entered history at an early stage due to Mount Moses, only in the last ten years has it been developed for diving tourism. The coral reefs along the Sinai coast line are considered some of the best in the world. At the same time they are the closest tropical coral reefs to Europe. Without a doubt, the Red Sea with its well known tourism centers of Dahab, Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh and the newly developed area of Marsa Alam and the Southern Red sea is one of the best diving destinations in the world. It has always been a beautiful place, but never before has it been as easy to reach and comfortable as it is today.

Dive Sites of Egypt

Air temperatures in winter range from 60°-75°F. The water can drop down into the upper 60°F, with the coolest temperatures occurring in February. Summer land temperatures slide right up past 100°F, with the water temperature rising into the low 80°F (take a wetsuit anyway). The hottest month is August. If you are going to do any land exploration (and how do you visit the Red Sea without at least a peek at the pyramids), the tradeoff for warm water is hot weather. The manta season is from March - June.
