Charlotte: What is your favorite destination
for fun diving nowadays?
Larry: I would have to say the Solomon
Islands and Papua
New Guinea. Because of the sheer diversity and bountiful marine
life. The night diving is phenomenal, there is so much to absorb there.
The drop-offs were spectacular in Rabaul. Most dive sites were accessible
by Land Rruiser. We just went chest deep in the water, put our face
down and look down in the abyss. It was like diving in crystal clear
water. I've seen blue water like that only in Nuclear Power plants.
Because the water is so radiated it ends up crystal clear. Papua New
Guinea was amazing. It changed my life forever.
One
of the things I managed to do which is quite unique in this profession
is to combine commercial and recreational diving during my career and
life. Most commercial divers have no inkling of fun diving. They look
down upon it. Don't think it worth it.
I enjoy both. I always stayed away from technical and cave diving however.
It doesn't seem logical to me to push that envelope without a hose to
feed me air.
Charlotte: You also run a business with your
artist wife Helen Goldberg?
Larry: I retired my company and had my
back surgery and it took quite a while to recover. Helen started to
paint on silk at that time. Just like that. She is a very talented artist
but doesn't enjoy the sales and marketing aspect of the business. I
enjoy sales and I really like her art. It seemed only natural to me
to get involved. She sold 21 pieces last year so things are going well.
Having a lot of contacts in the diving industry has its advantages as
well. We are now expanding into providing designs for bathing suits
and resort wear. Have a look at our Website: http://www.seasilks.com
Charlotte: The artwork is stunning, how did it
come about and where can we buy it?
Larry:
Helen did the books and project managed some of the jobs for my company
for years. But she is a creative person at heart coming from a background
of dance and so she started to paint. She is completely self-taught
and learning additional techniques as she goes. Silk lends itself well
for underwater art. The material reflects the colors beautifully and
gives you a three dimension feeling.
You can buy her art online at http://www.seasilks.com.
She is also available for commissions work.
Thank you Larry!
