Thinking of getting into underwater photography but have no idea where to start?

You need to begin by thinking about how much money you are willing to invest in a camera system. As you will quickly find out, these systems are not cheap.

Basic point-and-shoot viewfinder cameras are cheap but they won't give you the flexibility you need to learn about photography. Rule them out unless you want snapshots. A viewfinder camera with accessory lenses and an off-camera flashgun is really the cheapest option you should consider. Go for a model that offers user-adjustable shutter speed and aperture settings.

The Sea & Sea Motormarine II is a popular choice and has a small built-in-flash, which is fine to get you started if you can't afford the flashgun immediately.

The other viewfinder system you've probably heard lots about is the Nikonos V. This camera is the most rugged system and has a wide range of excellent-quality lenses and flashguns, although they come at a premium price.

The most versatile underwater system you can buy is a land SLR camera in a waterproof housing. Rather then having a viewfinder window, SLR offer through-the-lens viewing, which means you're seeing exactly what you're taking a picture of. They also have auto-focus. This is the most expensive system, but it's actually the easiest to use, once you've got to grips with the basics of exposure and composition.

Whatever you choose, don't buy from the first person you speak to. Look around, ask a lot of questions and talk to as many people as you can who use the different systems.

An excellent source of information for underwater cameras and their prices is the B&H Camera and Equipment Site.

Read up about the different options and think about taking a course or two to learn from a professional. Finally, make sure you practice those buoyancy-control skills. Good luck and send us your best!
