The world's smallest video housing!

The world's smallest underwater video housing is a glove fit for the Sony DCR PC5 digital video camera. The housing with camera and 2 hour battery weighs only 2 ½ pounds with a flat port and about 2 3/4 pounds with the wide-angle lens. This housing is so tiny, it will clip to your BC like a flashlight or mount on a small tray alongside a Nikonos - or on top of a still camera housing, or on a strobe arm. It fits nicely in most BC pockets. The camera provides 1 hour of recording time in the mini DV format, and, additionally will record still images on the same tape or on an onboard memory card and will upload directly to your computer. These tapes will play directly into your TV or can be copied onto a standard VHS tape from the camera. more...

Thinking of getting into underwater videography but have no idea where to start?

If you do not own a camcorder yet, choose the Housing first. Ask manufacturers and distributers which camcorder fits their housings.

Then ask yourself if you want a standard 8mm, the enhanced and more costly HI-8 camcorder or venue into the digital camcorders.

If you want a low-budget personal hobby, 8-mm may suffice. HI-8 is a popular choice for underwater videography. If you want sharper images than 8mm without the added cost of a digital camcorder, HI-8 is the best choice. Many of the underwater videos you've seen on TV were shot on HI-8 camcorders. HI-8 camcorders record up to about 400 lines of resolution.

If you want high-quality acquisitions footage, digital is the way to go. Digital camcorders record about 500 lines of resolution. Digital tapes can be copied to any other format for editing and duplication. Digital is for professionals and discerning amateurs.

The new compact digital camcorder is much smaller and the mini DV cassett is smaller than the 8mm cassette so the camcorder and its housing can be smaller.

Whatever you choose, don't buy from the first person you speak to. Look around, ask a lot of questions and talk to as many people as you can who use the different systems.

An excellent source of information for underwater video cameras and their prices is the B&H Camera and Equipment Site.

For manufacturers of housings have a look at:
Amphibico
Gates UW Products
Ikelite
Light & Motion Industries

Read up about the different options and think about taking a course or two to learn from a professional. Finally, make sure you practice those buoyancy-control skills. Good luck and send us your best!
