Kubu is a small village in the Nort East of Bali, just a 10-minute drive north of Tulamben. Kubu is actually divided into two completely different shores, the first one is a slope that is overgrown with hard corals and big barrel sponges, and the second one is where corals growing on rocks with sandy spots in between. These two areas are a favorable snorkeling location. In Kubu diving site, you can find abundant beautiful coral reefs combined with swirling fishes, which is the attraction here. Various hard and soft corals, sponges and fan are the kinds of good variety in Kubu dive site. The highlight of diving in Kubu is pygmy seahorse, various nudibranch such as Phyllidia varicosa and Reticulidia halgerda that you can find freely there.
You can reach Bali from almost anywhere in the world. Bali has an international airport in Denpasar, the Ngurah Rai Airport. This airport is also accessible from the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, and some other major cities in Indonesia such as Bandung, Surabaya and Makassar. From South Bali or the Ngurah Rai International Airport of Denpasar, you can reach Tulamben village in a 4-hour drive. You can rent a car and a driver or take a bus to reach Tulamben. From Tulamben, you will only need a 10-minute drive to the west to reach Kubu. Similar to Tulamben dive sites, Kubu dive site is easily accessible from the rocky lava shore or by local boat from Tulamben dive sites.
Kubu dive site has ridges and reef fingers stretching from 5 until 40 meters. There is a wonderful coral garden in a shallow area of 3 to 8 meters at the start of the dive. The coral garden leads into a beautiful ridge covered with fields of staghorn coral and some good sized soft things, which sometimes host rare crustaceans like porcelain crabs and tiny little cowries snails. This diving site is very excellent to be explored, especially for its beautiful reef formation. Tempting marine lives including regular sightings of barracuda and turtles can be seen here frequently. You can also see sharks and bumphead parrotfish in this Bali diving spot.
The visibility here is excellent, which is around 15-30 meters with average current from mild to moderate. Much further, you can find a drop-off that beautifully grows with soft coral and any possible species of reef fish that can be found there. Here, you can also find White & Blacktip reef sharks that swim pass occasionally to check out their feeding ground. Lionfish occupies the deeper sections of reef and nudibranches can be found by divers at all depths. The highlight of Kubu dive site is an area at 27 meters of depth with a sandy field full of blue-spotted stingrays and the gorgeous juvenile pinnate batfish hiding in the dark of crevices and holes. Other marine lives that can be found here are Jack, Trevallies, Snapper, Fussilier, Barracuda, Sweetlips, Butterfly, Cardinal, Angel, Grouper, Damselfish, Batfish, Wrasse, Parrot, Surgeon, Trigger, Box, Puffer, Porcupine, Flounders, Gobies, Moray eels, Eels, Leaf fish, Scorpion, Flathead, Blennies, Dragonet, Octopus, Shrimp, Crab, Nudibranch, Flatworm, and Shell.
Kubu is a small fishing village in the north of Tulamben, Bali. There are two dive sites on Kubu reef that are easy and perfect for beginners and more experienced divers. Diving in Kubu starts in a shallow coral garden then going down along a nice wall with a very good marine life. Kubu dive site is a really great place for muck diving with nudibranchs, shrimps, crabs and many other amazing marine lives.
