The Math Sea Urchin (Echinometra mathaei) is one of the most common urchin species found on coral reefs in tropical regions. It has a worldwide distribution and is known to occur in Hawaii, Philippines, Indonesia, East Africa, Red Sea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. It can be found in crevices on coral reefs or at the base of ledges and boulders and it is generally seen in shallow depths. It is known to feed on red corralline algae and other tropical algaes. The test (body) of this species can be pale green, white, pink or lilac.
The Math Sea Urchin (Echinometra mathaei) body grows to a maximum length of at least 7cm.
