Environmental Commitment

At Patuno Resort Wakatobi we are committed to the environment, and we are continually striving to improve our environmental policies. We invite all guests to help us in this effort by recycling plastic bottles and other recyclables such as aluminum cans and bottles, being conscious of energy consumption by turning off lights and air conditioning units when leaving your room, and by reusing towels when it is not an inconvenience to do so.

We are in the process of designing and cultivating a large organic fruit and vegetable garden close to the resort in the hope that we will be able to supply our Wakatobi Resort kitchens with the majority of the fruits and vegetables needed in the near future. We are excited by this prospect as not only will we be providing guests with meals made up of freshly picked ingredients, but also our carbon footprint will be reduced as it will no longer be necessary to import vegetables by boat and plane from nearby islands.

Social Commitment

At Patuno Resort Wakatobi we are committed to being socially and culturally responsible. The traditional Wakatobi Island culture is varied and unique and at Patuno Resort Wakatobi we celebrate the Wakatobi Culture and are concerned for it’s preservation. We invite guests to get involved and experience local customs and culture through taking part in our Wakatobi cultural tours and half day trips. We ensure that local communities financially benefit from these visits and you will have the opportunity to purchase local Wakatobi handicrafts such as traditional weaving’s and ceramics.

We also employ local people from the Wakatobi region wherever possible and we take care to provide them with a high standard of training in order to increase their skills base and future enjoyability in the tourism and hospitality industry. Our capacity building training programs for local Wakatobi staff include; 3 month residential hospitality training programs in Bali, regular on-the-job English Language training, PADI Dive Course training up to Dive Master level, Emergency First Response training, basic IT skills training, and on-the-job customer service training. The aim of employing local staff is to ensure that local Wakatobi communities benefit from tourism generated income in the Wakatobi area.

Another key aim in employing people from local Wakatobi communities is to provide them with alternative income opportunities. We believe that in providing members of local communities with job opportunities in the tourism sector, we are offering an attractive alternative to some of the traditional income generation techniques which have been found to put pressure on local natural resources and result in environmental degradation. Since the Wakatobi Region became Indonesia’s third largest Marine National Park many new regulations have been put into place to protect the coral reefs and preserve bio-diversity. As a result there are restrictions on fishing, and destructive fishing practices (which unfortunately many people used to rely on as a way of generating income) have been banned in the interest of preserving the Wakatobi’s unique marine environment. As a result local communities are in need of alternative income solutions and at Patuno Resort Wakatobi we are committed to being a part of the solution, both in the interest of the environment and in the interest of local communities. We see the development of responsible diving tourism in the Wakatobi region as a key component in protecting this marine reserve and we are proud to be involved.

Of course Scuba Diving is one of the main activities offered at Patuno Resort Wakatobi, as the Wakatobi Marine National park is most famous for it’s underwater paradise. Our professional Wakatobi Dive Centre offers a range of PADI dive courses and Wakatobi diving day trips. If your a qualified diver we are sure you will enjoy our range of Wakatobi diving day trips and if you haven’t yet tried scuba diving then here is your chance, just get in touch and sign yourself up for a Discover Scuba Diving Session or a Scuba Diver Course.

For non-dives (and divers!) snorkeling on our home reef offers a great way to relax and enjoy the colourful and vibrant Wakatobi coral reefs. We offer guided snorkeling trips, by boat or directly from the beach. Rest assured that our knowledgeable guides will look after you, take you to the best Wakatobi snorkeling spots, and point out all sorts of interesting fish and invertebrate species. For the more intrepid among you, feel free to step out of your bungalow onto the beach and take a short swim out to the reef. We just ask that you remember to go in pairs and that you check in with the dive centre staff to let us know your plans, and also so that they can fill you in on any local information regarding possible currents and conditions.

Wakatobi Whale & Dolphin Watching Trips

Join for a Wakatobi whale & dolphin watching trip. This offers a great chance to see dolphins, pilot whales and sometimes larger whales such as sperm whales and grey whales, in their natural environment. Our knowledgeable guides can regularly find these beautiful species, and you will find that the playful nature of the dolphins and pilot whales means that they often follow our boats ducking and diving in the waves and surf. They often come so close enabling us to hear their high pitched clicking and squeaking, and enabling us to see the details and expressions on their intelligent faces. This trip is a must for all animal lovers! Trips generally take 2-4 hours and prices include snacks and soft drinks.

Jet Skiing

Patuno Resort Wakatobi has 2 jet ski’s available for guests to hire. Partake in some Wakatobi watersports and join our experienced guides for an exhilarating ride. You can even have a go at driving one yourself ! Jet Skis are hired out for 20 minute intervals and prices are on a per person basis (min 2 people). Prices include guides and the compulsory use of life jackets. For safety reasons we have designated jet ski areas and we request that guests strictly adhere to these rules at all times.

Banana Boat Rides

Bounce along the top of the Wakatobi Waves sitting astride our banana boat (up to 6 riders). Don a lifejacket, hold on tight, and be prepared to fall in! This sure is good fun for all the family, adventurous couples, or groups of friends. It is sure to make you laugh out loud if not scream with glee! Banana boat rides are also calculated on a per person basis per 20 minutes (min 2 people).

Towed Tubing

Lie on your belly aboard a disk shaped tube and hold on tightly as our motor boat tows you skimming across the waves. The motor boat will make sharp turns and your task is to try not to fall in – although it is always more fun if you do! Life jackets are compulsory as you are bound to fall in so be prepared to get very wet!

Rubber Dingy Hire

If you prefer to take things more slowly then hire a rubber dingy and quietly row your way around the bay. Early mornings and late afternoons are the perfect time for this and if you’re feeling romantic you can order a packed lunch from our restaurant and take your sweetheart off for some quiet time and discover a secluded beach up the coast from the resort. Alternatively if you’re looking for some exercise a spell of vigorous rowing is a great way to work up a sweat, and an appetite for breakfast!

Traditional Style Sailing in Dugout Canoes

Join one of our local guides and learn how to sail a small dug out canoe with a bamboo mast and a plastic sail. A great pastime on days when there is a strong breeze to whip up your sails and carry you across the bay. Learn the fine art of catching the breeze without capsizing the canoe, and also how to steer using just a paddle. Be prepared for relentlessly bailing out water with a scoop, as these local canoes are known for being quite leaky! Great fun and ideal for 2-3 people at a time.

Bicycle Rental

We have 5 bikes for hiring out to our more adventurous guests. There are some great mountain biking trails around the Wangi-Wangi island and it is a great way to get out and about and to see the Wakatobi countryside and to observe the way that the local Wakatobi farmers and fishermen work and live.

Cultural Village Tours

We offer a couple of different cultural village tours and half day trips. The range of activities included in cultural trips are; visit a traditional market, visit a historic fort, visit a Bajo sea nomad village on stilts and see how these amazing people have survived living literally on and in the water for centuries. Also visit a seaweed farming village and learn how these people make a living by farming seaweed, visit old ladies who weave the traditional Wakatobi material which is used by local communities for all number of garments, and also visit a holy spring which locals believe to bring youthfulness, beauty and good luck to all who wash their faces with the holy water.

Traditional Dance Ceremony

If you are interested in watching traditional music and dances we can arrange cultural evenings at the resort or afternoon trips out to a village (Min 8 people). Colourfully dressed dancers along with their accompanying band or drummers and musicians offer interesting entertainment and guests are often invited to learn the steps and join in the dancing. This is a great way to become familiar with Wakatobi culture.

Campfire & Beach BBQ

For small groups of guests (min 8 people) we can organize campfire and BBQ evenings on the beach. If this is something you are interested in please let us know.

Resort Gardens

Patuno Resort Wakatobi is enthusiastic about growing vegetables in its two hectare garden. At present (September 2011) we are harvesting tomatoes, chillies, aubergines, and pumpkins. Ealier in the season we were harvesting cucumbers, sweetcorn, ubi (a root vegetable), papayas, chinese greens and kangkung (Indonesian green leafy vegetable). This fresh produce is brought straight to you in the Patuno Resort Restaurant. We hope to one day be able to grow all the seasonal vegetables and fruits and ensure that we can provide an even greater amount of fresh homegrown vegetables in our restaurant.

The Wakatobi Marine National Park is renowned for its spectacular underwater world and as a magical paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. Here at Patuno Resort Wakatobi we are committed to providing our guests with the opportunity to experience Wakatobi diving at it’s finest.

Our professionally run Dive Center along with the wide range of Wakatobi dive sites which we visit ensures that even the most experienced divers are delighted with the Wakatobi Diving experience on offer at Patuno Resort Wakatobi.

Divers can enjoy a number of different home reef dives accompanied by a PADI Dive Master guide, and home reef dives can be boat dives or shore dives depending on conditions and diver preferences. However due to occasional strong currents we nearly always dive the home reef from a small speed boat, as opposed to shore diving. Species regularly seen on the home reef include; schooling jack, schooling trevallies, a myriad of colourful fusiliers, reef sharks, and even the occasional passing hammerhead shark.

Patuno Resort Wakatobi also offers a range of diving all around Wangi-Wangi Island, and further afield as far as the Western tip of Kaledupa and aroung Hoga Island, enabling you to explore many more of our favourite Wakatobi dive sites.

At Patuno Resort Wakatobi we do diving a little differently. Rather than coming back to the Resort after every dive, we rest and take surface intervals on one of our comfortable wooden dive boats. Our dive boats are equipped with WC facilities, towels, a fresh water tank for rinsing cameras, refreshments such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, drinking water and a range of snacks. We also often take a packed lunch with us if we are going to be out all day. This approach to Wakatobi diving enables us to take you to sites further afield, and let you enjoy a variety of different marine habitats.

We operate two different dive schedules, for those wanting to do two dives per day only, we leave the Resort at 8am by air-conditioned minibus. We take a short 15 minute bus ride through local villages and meet the boat at Sombu Jetty, from where we set off on our diving trip. After a second dive we return to Sombu Jetty at 1pm and take the short minibus ride back to Patuno Reosrt Wakatobi in time for lunch at 1.30pm.

For those wishing to do 3 dives per day, we follow the same schedule as the 2 dives per day trip, except that we have lunch on the dive boat, or on a little secluded beach, and return to Sombu Jetty in the late afternoon, where our minibus awaits. Depending on the diving day trip destination you may arrive back at the Resort anytime between 4pm and 6pm.

The Dive Sites

A wide range of world class Wakatobi dive sites are easily accessible from Patuno Resort Wakatobi. The stunning home reef offers fantastic Wakatobi diving and snorkeling, and is situated just a short swim away from the long white-sand beach which fringes the entire length of the resort. A small speed boat can also be used to access the diving and snorkeling sites on the home reef.

The Patuno Resort Wakatobi home reef is unique in that it is a very long barrier reef with a steep outer wall plunging to great depths. It boasts enormous overhangs, stunning coral reef topography and a couple of swim throughs.

Some of our favourite Wakatobi dive sites include:

Jon’s Point. Located on the home reef this Dive site is characterised by its many overhangs and caves. The deeper dives on this wall bring you to overhangs where hammerhead sharks have been seen to pass. Reef sharks and Schooling barracuda are often sighted here. Many very large sea fans and encrusting coral species cover the wall creating a plethora of different colours.

Patuno Gate. This home reef dive is situated in just a short boat journey from the resort. The dive begins on the sandy slope on the inside of the barrier reef where after a short swim we pass through a saddle at about 15m where turtles can sometimes be seen. As we pass over this saddle the reef drops away into a beautiful wall covered in an array of huge barrel sponges, soft and hard coral. Swarms of red tooth and Black trigger fish are in abundance here. The reef has many overhangs and swim throughs that house orange cup sponges and sea fans. Reef sharks, Spotted Eagle rays and Barracuda can also be seen here.

The Zoo (Waelumu). This dive is at the tip of the long barrier reef which stretches out in front of Patuno Resort Wakatobi and ends in front of the Waelumu village area. The steep wall drops from 5 meters down to about 35 meters where it turns into a sandy slope which continues to extends down into the depths. A great dive where schooling barracuda and big eye trevallies are common, as are passing white tip and black tip reef sharks and dog tooth tuna. The wall teams with a huge variety of gorgonian sea fans of all different colours making it a great habitat for pygmy seahorses. Colemans Pygmys and Bargybanti’s have been spotted here. The 5 meter tip of this barrier reef makes for a enjoyable safety stop, where you can take your time enjoying the table corals and panorama of colourful soft corals.

Waha Wall. This wall is teeming with a huge variety of corals, huge barrel sponges and sea fans and it plunges to depths of 60m or more. This is a great site for passing pelagic fish such schooling tuna and eagle rays. It is possible to experience schools of spawning bumphead wrasse and parrot fish. There are many turtles, trevallies, and myriads of other fish in every direction. There are also many things to interest macro-lovers, if you can focus and tear your eyes away from the colorful bigger picture! Commonly we see a variety of nudibranches, leaf scorpion fish, porceline crabs, and many more interseting critters. This dive is suitable for beginner divers as well as advanced divers as currents here are generally mild or non-exis

Wandoka Pinnacle. From the surface this pinnacle doesn’t look all that impressive, but once you descend down to 10m and begin to follow the ridge on the side you will be astonished by the variety of hard and soft corals, huge sponges, sea fans and black corals. This site is teeming with fish, and dog-toothed tuna and Big eye trevallies can regularly be found schooling here, along with schooling bohar snappers, schooling fusiliers, Giant trevallies, butterfly fish, turtles, and sometimes eagle rays. The safety stop on the top of the pinnacle provides an opputunity to take photos of scorpion fish and play with the tightly schooling juvenile striped catfish.

Turtle Transporter. This often fast flowing drift dive is a favourite of many guests. A steady current flows along this wall indented with many overhangs and caves where large turtles often rest and shelter from the flow. Regularly turtle numbers can get into double figures with the larger specimens sitting staring back at the approaching diver. Other common seen sights include groups of large eagle rays, schools of large midnight snapper and a ‘family’ of Napoleon wrasse.

Coliseum. This dives offers a bit of all, coral garden, sand slope, wall. The central part is a very pretty garden that starts at 5m/15ft, slopes down to 20m/60ft and continues deeper as sand slope. Eagle rays, mobula rays and schooling bumphead parrotfish are occasionally passing by on the slope. On the sides the garden is getting steeper, ending on two steep points – with a top around 8m/25ft and bottom more than 50m/150ft. The points are usually swept by current and their walls are full of fan corals, soft corals and lots of fish. Bargibanti pygmys seahorse are not uncommon and Coleman’s pygmys have been spotted as well.

Wanci Jetty. Wanci jetty is a rare treat for underwater photography enthusiasts, accessible only at certain times. It is home to a profusion of species and enormous flashing schools of bait fish. The columns of the jetty are covered in sponges and fans, and the reef flat and slopes are home to cuttlefish, mantis shrimp, several species of morays and a variety of pipefish. A true muck dive that reveals more unusual creatures with every visit.

Topi Miring. This site consists of two pinnacles connected by a saddle ridge, the slopes of which are covered in large acropora tables, barrel sponges and mushroom corals. The corals formations and sponges are huge and many experienced divers have commented on how pristeen and ancient these corals must be. Patrolling great barracuda, nudibranchs and many species of cryptic crustaceans are found here.

Red Fish. This site is so named after both the large schools of red tooth triggers that are found here and a guest who helped discover the site. Here the reef consists of a gentle slope with high coral coverage ending in a sharp corner where you can hang out and watch the large pelagic species pass by.

Kapota Ridge. The ridge here extends out from the island of Kapota’s home reef. The dive starts on a gentle sandy slope where many barrel sponges and foliose coral can be seen. Regular sitings of pelagic species such as dog tooth tuna and trevalies make this a popular spot.

Kapota Point. On the furthest point of nearby Kapota Island, this site is one of the most vibrantly coloured walls in the region. Enormous sea fans and coral overhangs are found all over the wall, and schools of reef fish as well as pelagic drifters can often be seen taking refuge from the brisk currents that ensure a multitude of fish species.

Karang Gurita. This is a great location for an outstanding days diving. This is a stunning coral atoll shaped like an eye. Several fantastic sites can be dived here. The dive sites here encompass walls, coral gardens, plateaus, ridges and slopes. You can see big sponges, a huge variety of sea fans, colourful soft and hard corals, schooling trevallies, barracudas, turtles, rays, reef sharks, or if you’re lucky even hammerhead sharks! This is a favourite dive site and guaranteed to be an exhilarating dive!

Karang Gurita (Clown Fish City). As the name implies, this site is home to an amazing concentration of Amphiprion percula as well as several other anemone fish species. Located on Karang Gurita off the south east coast of Wangi-Wangi Island, it is an excellent place to encounter pelagic species and boast 25m+ visibility much of the year. The stronger currents in the area bring in impressive schooling fish.

Kaledupa Double Spur. On the edge of nearby Kaledupa Island, Double Spur has some of the most pristine hard coral coverage in the area. The dive begins on a deep ridge covered in soft corals and anemones with resident porcelain crabs and ends in a shallow garden of large boulder corals, plate corals and anemone fishes of all species covering the reef.

Kaledupa. The reef slope here has many overhangs and crevices where blue spotted rays hide away. The crest of the reef is covered in a variety of soft coral where large schools of fusiliers and juvenile trevally are seen.

Langira. The crest of this reef sits at approximately 10m. Here very large coral Bombies are the dominant growth form with large numbers of juvenile reef species using this as a nursery area. The reef itself slopes away into the depths with overhangs housing blue spotted rays and more. Eagle rays and Tuna often pass in the blue.

The Ridge. This ridge extends out from the top of Hoga Island’s home reef. The area often has currents running along it making this a drift dive. One of the best features of this site is the much loved ‘crazy corner’ where the current rushes around the tip of the ridge. It is here that large schools of pelagic fish such as giant trevally gather to feast of the even larger schools of fusiliers and triggers that reside here.

Inner Pinnacle. These two pinnacles lie close to the Hoga home reef. The pinnacles have a ridge at approximately 15m connecting the two. Large schools of Barracuda are often sighted on this pinnacle as well as crocodile fish and large scorpion fish being prevalent on the top of the pinnacle.

Outer Pinnacle. This is a large pinnacle near Hoga Island with a ridge leading away from it at a depth of 25m. Outstanding corals, big sponges, and a huge variety of colourful soft corals cover the pinnacle and ridge. On this dive you will be surrounded by thousands of fish, from giant trevallies, schooling fusiliers, passing tuna, great barracudas, large napoleon fish and many more. There are also many interesting nudibranches and frog fish for the photographers. This dive also offers the opportunity to look for the very well camouflaged scorpion fish and other critters during the 5m safety stop.

Hoga Channel. This is a great site to visit at high tide when it offers great visibility and an abundance of fish, against a backdrop of spectacular coral. As it is a channel fish come to feed here at high tide as the currents bring plankton to the area, and other fish use it as a highway. This a spawning site for snapper especially at full moon, and we commonly see schooling barracuda, trevallies, napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrot fish along with many more smaller fish in large schools. This is one of the favourite sites around Hoga island.
