This is undoubtedly the most well-known and amazing cave dive in Layang Layang, and can be reached by a 15 mins boat ride from the resort. As you drift down above a sandy ledge with beautiful coral formations, sea fans and whips, towards a wall that drops down to around 30m deep, this spot is where you will catch enormous pelagic fish in action including sharks of all varieties,
At about 24m further down the wall, you’ll come across a small 3m wide entrance to Sharks Cave. Guarded by dogfish tuna and giant trevally, take care to drift in slowly, so as not to kick up any sediment or disturb the sleeping families of whitetip and nurse sharks. You could, if careful, swim up next to the leopard sharks resting on the base, but give a wide berth as you enter and exit as you don’t want to be tangled up in the oncoming path of confused sharks!
As you make your way out and up along the wall with its macro creatures, lobsters, frogfish and black coral patches, with good viz between 20m to about 40m, you might even see dogtooth tuna, manta rays, Hammerhead and grey reef sharks swimming in the fairly strong currents of the open waters beyond.
